March 2010 – PHFN invited to Expert Review Committee meeting in Minna, Niger State, Nigeria

The Expert Review Committee (ERC) on Polio Eradication meets regularly to monitor progress on Polio eradication in Nigeria, as well as to provide expert technical advice to the government.

The National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) invited the PHFN to the 19th meeting of the ERC which took place March 22 to 24, 2010.   This meeting also discussed routine immunisation, with a day set out specifically for Measles.

Represented by Dr. Aruna, the meeting provided the PHFN an invaluable opportunity to see first hand the efforts of national, state and local governments as well as development partners at eradicating polio from Nigeria. It also provided , as well as the situation of routine immunisation services across the country.

Dr. Aruna had informal discussions with the Chairman of the Board of NPHCDA, HRH the Emir of Tsonga Dr Haliru Yahaya, on the readiness of the PHFN to collaborate with the NPHCDA on improving routine immunisation services. HRH was supportive of this.

Discussions were subsequently held with the NPHCDA’s Director of Immunisation on further exploration of possible areas of collaboration.

Dr. Aruna also met with the Head of Epidemiology in the Nigeria Office of the World Health Organisation (WHO) who was ready to support identified collaborative efforts between PHFN and NPHCDA.
